[00:00:00] If you're looking to grow your business as a registered dietitian, you've come to the right place. If you're not sure what to do or what steps to take next so that you can create flexibility and freedom in your life, then you're going to learn a lot from tuning into our podcast here at DietitianBoss.
[00:00:17] I'm Libby Rothschild, the founder of DietitianBoss, a [00:00:20] fellow registered dietitian and business owner. And in our podcast, I share some The highs and the lows. And I talk all about how to grow your business, get it started. And I interview our clients to date. We've had over 200 interviews from clients who share their journey on our podcast, dietitian boss.
[00:00:37] On today's episode, I'm excited to talk [00:00:40] about 10 dietitians. You should follow on Tik TOK. So this is an important topic, because you might know that TikTok's algorithm helps content go viral quickly. As registered dietitians, we have an option to use this platform to grow our business and our brand.
[00:00:57] There's also an engaged audience on TikTok, so you can [00:01:00] connect with younger Or a health conscious demographic. And also for those of you who like creativity, using shorter, engaging videos to showcase your expertise and personality can be fun. And it's very popular. So if you're not familiar with Tik TOK and what dietitians to follow, I'm going to share a few and why, if you are familiar and you might learn [00:01:20] something from how I'm sharing why I chose this particular dietitians, for example, for today's podcast episode, I found this list.
[00:01:27] And the reason that I chose these dietitians is because they're following a framework that I teach. And I noticed them because they're either consistent, they're vulnerable, and they're also refraining from clinical jargon when they [00:01:40] talk or when they post content. So my list is by no means as comprehensive.
[00:01:44] I prepared for this episode fairly quickly. So I just opened up TikTok, which I'm not a power user of by any means. I much prefer Instagram and YouTube. But with TikTok, I popped open the feed and I searched dietitian in the keywords and these dietitians came [00:02:00] up. I'm only following a handful of people, so yes, I am following a few people that did pop up as well, but I want you to not think about the list as much as think about why I'm using these dietitians as an example.
[00:02:12] So I narrowed down who I saw on TikTok as dietitians to and wanted to give an example of those who are consistent and who's [00:02:20] really fitting to this list that I teach. So, in my program, and in my trademark method, I teach a content checklist, and there's many versions of it, but I'm going to share the most basic version.
[00:02:30] And that is to think about 3 things when you're first posting content. The first. Thing I want you to think about is vulnerability. And that means, are you sharing your story or showing [00:02:40] your face? You're using an emotional word or you're connecting even through an emoji. If your content is in the written form.
[00:02:47] The 2nd thing I want you to think about is refraining from jargon. So it's so comfortable to slip into clinical jargon and use words and language that people don't understand, but that's not going to help your audience. So [00:03:00] you really want to make sure that you're using language that they understand.
[00:03:03] The third thing from my list would be consistency. Now that can depend on the platform. So some people on TikTok are making five TikToks a day, 10 TikToks a day, where others are less consistent, but they still have some kind of a system. So I want you to think what system works for you. I hope that through [00:03:20] sharing this list and example of these 10 dietitians to follow on TikTok, using my content checklist, you're going to get some ideas for your own content.
[00:03:27] So the first dietitian that I want to mention to follow is very popular. And she was the first to pop up when I searched dietitian and that's nutrition by Kylie. So she showed up at the top. If you search [00:03:40] dietitian on TikTok app, her name comes up first, specifically a TikTok that she has that she created from 2022.
[00:03:48] And she talks about why becoming a dietitian is hard. And that is at the top of the page. And so the reason this works is because she tells her story as to why she became a dietitian. Dietician and what we can learn about that is [00:04:00] her vulnerability. She tells a story while preparing food and that gives us something to look at.
[00:04:04] So she makes her Tik TOK visually interesting, even though it's a quick Tik TOK. It's interesting because she's telling us a story and she's preparing food so we can learn something. So I think that's a great example of why she's doing so well on Tik TOK. The second dietician to follow would be [00:04:20] Abby Sharp.
[00:04:20] You're probably familiar with Abby's kitchen because she's very prominent on many platforms, many social media platforms, specifically YouTube. She's Probably one of the most popular dietitians on YouTube. So what I love about Abby, and again, she showed up at the top of the page. So that's why I used her in this list is that she shares why she thinks of something in general, this is her kind of format [00:04:40] and she references research, but she doesn't get technical.
[00:04:43] And so she does a great example of not using clinical jargon and showing herself as an expert, but not in a way that loses her audience. And she does this when she's explaining that she doesn't drink Diet Coke because she doesn't like the taste. She references research studies, but then she doesn't, she [00:05:00] refrains from being judgmental and she's very relatable.
[00:05:03] And I think that she does a fantastic job of creating content on social media. So make sure to check her out. The next dietitian would be Mary Ellen, diabetes dietitian of Milk and Honey. Now you might be familiar a couple years ago with the article that came out from the Washington Post called The [00:05:20] Food Industry Pays Influencer Dietitians to Shape Your Eating Habits.
[00:05:24] And she was listed as one of the dietitians. And the reason I put her on List is because I think it's important to see how our dietitians mentioning that they work with sponsorships, right? How are they ethically showing this? I know that's important to the Academy. So what is our industry? What are we [00:05:40] doing in our field?
[00:05:41] So check out Marianne to see how she's doing that, how she role models working with brand sponsorships. The next dietitian to follow on TikTok would be Ryan Kipping of Prenatal Nutritionist. Now, Ryan is, does an awesome job of being consistent and she's using features. So she's actually using the recommended products for sale feature.
[00:05:58] So that's great because she's really using [00:06:00] the app. But what I love the most about Ryan on TikTok is that she uses the pin feature. So she pins her post, but more than that, the post that she pinned or the TikTok that she pinned. Talks about using her app for free. So she's using a call to action to promote her product, which is her membership app.
[00:06:16] And she's talking about why her app is unique and different. And [00:06:20] she does such a great job of promoting herself. And I think that's something we can learn from as dietitians. And I love that she pinned that post so that it's front and center when you go on her Tik TOK. Next dietitian to follow would be Shauna Spence of The Nutrition Tea.
[00:06:34] And the reason that I really like her is because she's not only using vulnerability [00:06:40] in sharing her opinions as a non dietitian, but she's also using some trends that I think we can all learn from. So she's pinned a post called, Five things I'd never do as a dietitian. And she goes on to share what she would never do as a non diet dietitian in a very conversational way.
[00:06:55] That TikTok was very popular. And I think what we can learn from that is if [00:07:00] we don't have five things to say, we can come up with a couple, but I think it's a great idea that you can hop on some type of a trend, like five things I wouldn't do, five things I would do and share it so that you can start to build community.
[00:07:11] Now the next person would be Carol of Vegan Weight Loss Dietitian and she's doing that same trend, but what I love even more about Carol is that she's [00:07:20] taken that tagline of the things I'd never do, but she's actually made it a little more specific to her target audience. So check out her title. Three things I'd never do as a Vegan Weight Loss Dietitian.
[00:07:29] Now the reason I like that is because she's more specific. So she's really targeting not just, you know, what you're Hey, I'm a dietitian, but I help you with weight loss through vegan dietary patterns. So she's really [00:07:40] clear in her language. And I also liked that she gave three things and not five, because I think that giving a shorter list, especially when you're starting out can be really helpful.
[00:07:48] Cause once you start to get too long on the TikTok, it takes a lot of skill to be able to hold attention. So you always want to start more simply and build up with time to some more complex concepts when it comes to TikTok. The [00:08:00] next person or dietitians that I want you to follow on tick tock would be all access dietetics.
[00:08:05] The reason is that they do great job of building community on tick tock. And I think they're doing an awesome job. They help dietitians take a test to become a registered dietitian, right to sit in for the exam. And what I like about this. Feed is that Jenny, the owner [00:08:20] has pinned a post called shipping binder.
[00:08:22] And so it's actually her and she's not talking. It is showing. So she's showing vulnerability because it's her in the TikTok, but it's her actually creating and packaging a binder that she's going to send off to the dietitian to be who bought it so that they can study for their exam. I think that's great because [00:08:40] she's.
[00:08:40] Using the pen feature and she's showcasing her product, but she's doing it without talking. So I want you to see there are so many different ways to create TikToks that you don't always have to talk. You can use a variety of different tactics. So again, vulnerability because she's showing her face and then consistency.
[00:08:56] They're posting regularly and free from clinical jargon. So she's, you know, [00:09:00] making that really simple concept. The next dietitian to follow would be Jennifer Anderson of Kids Eating Color. You might be familiar with Jennifer Anderson. She's an amazing pediatric dietitian and her brand has grown exponentially.
[00:09:12] She even has other dietitians writing for her to help her with her blog on her site. What I like about Jennifer and the specific TikTok is that she [00:09:20] uses a quote as a post. And so that's something you can learn from too. If you don't want to make everything a video, she turns a quote into a video on TikTok.
[00:09:29] But that particular quote, she also gives credit to someone else for the inspiration. So that's a whole other podcast episode. If we're talking about giving credit, but I want you to know that she's got a great example of how to do that. [00:09:40] The next dietician to follow would be Casey of perimenopause. And the reason I chose Casey, I do follow her.
[00:09:46] She is. Past client is because I love seeing her show her face. She does it all the time. She's super comfortable. It's like, you're talking to a friend. So I just want you to know if you're not comfortable yet showing your face, it just takes practice. So you start one time a week and then you add in [00:10:00] more and more until you feel comfortable and connect with your audience.
[00:10:03] And it really does work because everybody on this list. is showing their face consistently. The last dietitian to follow would be Dr. Heather Finley. The reason that I chose Dr. Heather Finley is because she does show her face, she's vulnerable and consistent, and also she has a group practice, and she specializes in IBS.
[00:10:18] And I love that [00:10:20] she is role modeling and showcasing that dietitians can show their face consistently. Be on social media and promote a group practice. So few of us are, have a group practice, meaning that you hire and you employ either contract or hire W2 employees to help see the caseload, right? To see more patients, whether it's insurance or cash pay or a combination.
[00:10:37] There are fewer dietitians in group practice that are more in a solo [00:10:40] practice. And I think that it's important to acknowledge dietitians that are running a group practice and see how they're using social media. Because it takes a lot of skill to be able to attract clients from social media, not only for your business, but for a business that you are taking people that are interested, their prospects, and you're actually selling them into your staff.
[00:10:58] So I think there's a lot to learn from [00:11:00] Dr. Heather Finley, how she's using social media and how she's grown her gut health. practice. So I hope that this list, although again, it might've not been the most extensive list. It was the list that I was able to find quickly and point out the content checklist and how that content checklist can help you determine not only who to follow, but how to improve your content.
[00:11:19] So as a recap, my [00:11:20] content checklist is Number one, ask yourself before you post a piece of content, is it vulnerable? Am I either showing my face or am I using language that is emotionally compelling? The second thing I want you to ask yourself is, am I free from clinical jargon and I overly complicating this post or is the language that I'm using?
[00:11:37] Something other people that my audience are, [00:11:40] right? My target audience. Can they understand this? And then number 3 would be, am I consistent for what I've committed to strategically for this particular platform, right? Maybe from podcasting it's once a week. And for Instagram, it might be more frequently and for TikTok, it might be even more frequently.
[00:11:53] So ask yourself per platform, specifically today, we're talking about TikTok. Are you consistent enough? I hope today's [00:12:00] episode was helpful. Check out these dietitians to follow, and it might encourage you to improve your content strategy on pick talk.
